“Time To Heal” is an artistic autobiography chronicling an eighteen month relationship with a closeted diagnosed schizophrenic. The series of paintings detail the ups and downs of what proved to be a tumultuous and strenuous relationship. TTH is a multi-dimensional event, featuring twelve original paintings accompanied with personal memoirs, augmented with live performances.
Starchia chose, for her first solo exhibition, to examine the impact of schizophrenia and to inspire conversation about a seldom discussed disease, mental illness. Her aim is to assist in stripping away the stigma, shame, and embarrassment associated with the disease. During this time of war, family separation, devastation from natural disasters, and considerable stress from everyday life, we all need “Time To Heal.”“I also want to assist families and friends of the mentally ill so that they may be able to come away from the exhibition with information regarding where to go and receive help.”
This personal journey forced me to further explore the human psyche. Pondering question, how and why we create experiences that stretch and challenge our very existence, as we have come to know it?
One of the ways in which I kept some sense of myself, within this experience, was through journaling. The paintings reflect excerpts from those journal pages and have been embedded with images of family, phrases from the journal and phrases from many songs that became a great source of support and inspiration within this experience.
